Highly valued in terms of culinary eels, they are also seasoned gourmets themselves. When installing a rig on eels, many anglers do not pay attention to some important details. Siegfried will tell you, what to do, to catch these fish more effectively.
I have always had the most problems with catching eels. So, you read it right, I've always had the most problems. Pretty pretentious introduction, truth? But let me start at the beginning. As a young boy, I started fishing for ruffles. Having mastered this art, I decided to try my hand at catching fish worthy of the "real."” angler. My choice fell on eels. In the company of a friend on the stick, Mark, for the first time in my life, I went on a night fishing trip, to firmly pin the eels down. And so began a summer full of suffering.
Disappointment
At first, I was full of optimism. After all, I have listened to so many stories of experienced anglers about exciting fights at the limit of the endurance of the equipment with giant eels, about escapes into weed and so on. But catching this fish seemed very easy to me then – vein 0.40 mm (you never know…), large through weight, medium-sized galvanized hook and a bunch of large lollipops. The eel will do the rest. Ot,boyish naivety! The first season entirely devoted to eel fishing was one big disappointment. Nothing happened, not counting, of course, the constant battles with mosquitoes swarms. Throughout the summer, I only caught eight small eels, and the funniest thing was, that I always had bites then, when I forgot my mosquito spray.
Thinking has a future
But what not to say, I finally started to think about it. And there you go – after browsing the specialist literature, the riddle was solved by itself. Since eels have a better sense of smell than dogs, nothing unusual, that my results were so miserable. The next season, this time without any mosquito repellent, turned out to be much better – As the number of stings with bloodthirsty insects increased, so did the number of bites. However, twenty-one eels for the whole season, including a few fat ones, it was not yet a result that would bring you to your knees, especially, that my fishery had a direct connection to the open sea.
I explained the enormous amount of empty strikes with some drawbacks of the set, which I was fishing on.
Hook under the magnifying glass
My galvanized eel hooks were the first to come under the microscope and I must admit, that I had already disqualified them in the run-up. They were made of too thick wire, and sharpness also left much to be desired. Besides, they had such big ears, that the proverbial whale could squeeze through it. Nothing unusual, that fish, whose sensory organs were concentrated around the mouth, she noticed it immediately.
After a long search, I finally found two models of hooks. which were made for fishing for eels. I started using aberdeen no 6 with a long shank or the same size of gamakatsu hooks. By bending the blades of the hook, Fr. 2 mm sideways (tweezers) I managed to almost completely eliminate empty bites. Both models of these super sharp hooks are relatively small and made of fine wire. When fishing for lollipops, you should jam even with the slightest sign of bite. The super sharp hook then sticks into the eel's mouth in 90 on 100 cases. The angler fishing with the bail closed will quickly notice the benefits of instant hooking – the taking fish almost never manages to deeply swallow the hook, thus eliminating the problem of cutting the line and putting on a new leader.
The eel hook will be even more "deadly", if he is pushed to the side a little. However, beware: grab the hook with tweezers, not the tip (picture 1), but by the elbow (picture 2). Bent blade (on the right in the photo 3) the eel's mouth sticks more firmly, and thus almost completely eliminates empty strokes.
Pozdrawiam
