Where to find piggy?

It is widespread, but only in the Danube basin (Black Sea basin) and the Odra and Vistula rivers (the catchment area of the Baltic Sea). It inhabits the lower parts of the land of trout and grayling, and locally the entire upper part of the land of barbel, but only hard episodes, rocky bottom. The most magnificent specimens can be found in pits washed under weirs on a strong current of water. In winter, it is found in deeper waters, in summer it can go out into the shallows, where it eats algae that grows on stones.

When to catch a mumps?

Throughout the year, if the weather is fine. In the summer months, mornings and evenings, all day in autumn and winter. The water level has quite a big influence on the bites. Pig takes very well with utensils, when the water becomes slightly transparent, while much worse during the summer, low water level and its high transparency. Takes at certain times of the day, but the foraging times vary between river basins. The worst months to catch are October and November.

Equipment for catching pigs.

A light and long rod, line 0.15-0.2 mm, small hooks (type Cristal) size 7 — 12, delicate, a well-balanced float and a small load adapted to the speed of the water current.

Methods of catching a pig.

On the run (in cloudy water), the depth must be adjusted yes, so that the lure will drag along the bottom. The depth should be set for the flow in clear and low water, so that the bait floats just above the bottom. For a starter with a float and a light load in calmer water; purely vegetable baits, systematic baiting. When fishing with a starter without a float, the rod should be held in your hand, and the line between the fingers; we jam when we feel the bite (fishing line).

Pig lures.

In high and turbid water, slurry and worms or their pieces are used for overflow fishing. When we fish the river in clean water, we use slurry, cooked porridge, cake, flour preparations, rice, bread, bread, larvae of water insects. Egg white is also recommended (hard-boiled), to be, potatoes, pea, wheat and white worms”. Plant baits are used to catch with a float, as in the flow-through; we also use such lures for snap fishing without a float. The slurry is also good in both cases, if they are alive and mobile. The lures are similar to those used on the fence.

Other comments.

The pig is 30-40 cm long and weighs 1 kg. The prerequisite for success in fishing is the use of the most delicate gear and the correct hooking technique. We jam immediately after taking, even when we have an impression, that the hook got stuck in the bottom. Success also depends on proper baiting; pigs are taking on this bait, which we are baiting. In the spring, we catch the flow and slurry, from June to September for a bait over the bottom and a starter. In cloudy water with a bait wandering along the bottom. From October to the freezing of the waters for a starter with a float, manure is a good bait, unless another bait has turned out to be a good one right from the start. A characteristic feature of mumps is the black discoloration of the peritoneum. This fish is the staple food of Danube salmon. In Poland, the protective dimension of mumps is 20 cm, there is no grace period. Its catch is limited - to 10 individuals per day, including the weir, chub and bream. It is one of the few fish, whose food is mainly algae and other aquatic plants.
